Tri Valley Repertory Theatre's 27th Season (2010 - 2011) MAIN STAGE MUSICALS
October / November 2010 Oct. 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; Nov. 5, 6, 7 Book by: Rachel Sheinkin Music & Lyrics by: William Finn
Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. January / February 2011 Jan. 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30; Feb. 4, 5, 6 Music & Lyrics by: Stephen Schwartz Book by: John Caird From Stephen Schwartz (Godspell and Wicked) and John Caird of Les Miserables comes a joyous and inspirational musical about parents, children and faith...not to mention centuries of unresolved family business! Freely based on the story of Genesis, Children of Eden is a frank, heartfelt and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and children. Adam, Eve, Noah, and the “Father” who created them, deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children. The show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message: that “the hardest part of love... is letting go.” Used with permission Music Theater International
April / May 2011 Apr. 22, 23, 24, 29, 30; May 1, 6, 7, 8 Book by: Joe Dipietro Inspired by and featuring the songs of ELVIS PRESLEY Librettist Joe DiPietro’s exuberant jukebox musical shoehorns the songs of Elvis Presley into a narrative that’s part camp, part romantic farce. The loopy tale of mismatched lovers in a 1955 Midwest burg incorporates classics that range from sweet romantic ballads such as “Love Me Tender” to the rollicking “Devil in Disguise” and the hip-swiveling title song. Starting with a gender-bending plot device reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, DiPietro stirred in a dash of Footloose, then seasoned the brew with humorous flashes from sundry vintage shows such as The Music Man and Bye Bye Birdie. An underrated gem, driven by sidesplitting tongue-in-cheek humor, those evergreen chart-toppers, and a tinge of genuine heart. Used with permission Theatrical Rights Worldwide
July / August 2011 Jul. 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; Aug. 5, 6, 7 Music by: Richard Rodgers Book by: Howard Lindsay, Russel Crouse Lyrics by: Oscar Hammerstein II The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre.
